Senior Pastor

I grew up in a great Lutheran congregation in upstate New York. After a year at Albany Law School, I attended Union Seminary in New York City, where I rea/files/Pictures/Staff and church/Jeff2012.jpglized that the Presbyterian Church (USA) is an even better fit for me. I’ve served congregations in Deer Park and Westhampton Beach, NY, and in Caldwell and Pluckemin, NJ. I came to Carlisle in 2007. My wife, Kari, and I have two sons, Andrew (born in 2002) and Aaron (born in 2003). Kari coaches soccer, co-leads Vacation Bible School, and loves sushi! I enjoy running, cycling, and action movies. The boys attend W.G Rice Elementary School in Boiling Springs (we’re “Bubblers”), and they keep us busy with sports, music, and nature (we’re always checking out snakes, butterflies, and other creepy-crawly things). My life hasn’t always been easy, but it’s always been good. I’d love to “share the journey” with you.

I began ministry at Second Presbyterian Church in Carlisle in the summer of 2004.  Coming to this congregation wa/files/Pictures/Staff and church/2nd Pres Church Jennifer 2.jpgs familiar in some ways because I graduated from Carlisle  High School and was a member of Second Pres.  There are members of my family in the congregation in addition to some of my former Sunday school teachers and pastors.  I love meeting all the people of our congregation and being involved in the community.  I had been gone for thirty years, attending college in Wooster, Ohio, and studying in Nashville, TN, for a brief tenure at Vanderbilt School of Nursing only to learn that nursing is not where God was calling me.  I did some community organizing in Florida with farm workers and then in the mountains in Appalachia organizing health clinics.  During that time I met someone who asked me to visit her son in prison.  Shortly thereafter,  I began a death-row ministry in Alabama, where I worked for the next six years.

I attended Harvard Divinity School between 1985-1990.  After a year of hospital chaplaincy, in 1992 I was ordained at First Presbyterian in Germantown, PA.

My husband, Kevin is a physician at Hershey Medical Center, and my daughter Sarah Rose is living in Washington, DC, and works for the State Department in human rights.  We enjoy music, theater, art, and learning more about Civil War history.

Andy Hoke

Director of Music

I came to Second Pres in 2002 after an eight-y/files/Pictures/Staff and church/Andy2012a.jpgear stint teaching public school vocal and general music while doing church music part time.   I have a bachelor's degree from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, in Music Theory and Composition.  My principal instrument is voice, but I also play the piano and organ.   I obtained my teaching certificate from Lebanon Valley College, and I''ve done master's-level work in humanities and business.

I've been married to Christina Hoke since 1998, and we have three children:  Simon, India, and Philip.  Christina works at Wegmans in Mechanicsburg in the accounting office.  Simon and India really enjoy dancing with Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, and Philip enjoys sports and games.  Our whole family likes traveling and the arts.  The main part of my work at Second Pres involves direction or administration of our church's ten vocal and instrumental ensembles, playing the organ or piano for worship services, and directing the church's arts series.  One of my favorite aspects of ministry is choral directing.  I like the process of putting together beautiful texts and music.

Director of Christian Education

My husband Bill and I live in Shippensburg with our daughter, Brianna who keeps us busy with music, Girl Scouts and her love of reading.  Bill is a Ninth Grade Science Teacher in the Chambersburg School District and loves cycling. I enjoy reading and gardening, when time permits.  I re/files/Pictures/Staff and church/Vickif2012.jpgceived a Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s degrees in Agricultural Education from The Pennsylvania State University.  I taught for 15 years in the public school system before becoming Director of Christian Education in 2006.

My emphasis at Second Pres is the Sunday school and Kirk Night programming, focusing on the education of our children and adults. Together with the Christian Education Team we want to help our children grow, love, and serve. Our goal is to work with parents to give children a firm foundation and to make the Bible, the stories, and the church come alive for them.  If we can train our children while they are young and give them wonderful experiences in the church, we can give them the tools they need for the future. Our second goal is to provide opportunities for the adults of Second Pres to grow in their faith through small groups, Sunday morning classes and experiences on Wednesday evening.

I was born and raised in New Oxford, Pennsylvania,/files/Pictures/Staff and church/Deb2012_1.jpg one of 10 children.  I moved to Carlisle in 1977 and joined Second Pres in 1997.  I married my husband Phillip in 1988.  He has two sons, Eric and Greg, and we have a daughter, Rose.

Some things that I like to do are spend time with my family, go to the beach, and have friends and family over for cookouts and fun.

I started to work at Second Pres in 1999.  My current responsibilities include building maintenance, scheduling, serving on the Church Life Committee, and assisting many other program support areas.  I find joy and satisfaction in my ministry through the people whom I get to know better.  Everyone has a story, and I truly believe that we all have a mission here.

I grew up in western Pennsylvania where I beca/files/Pictures/Staff and church/David2012.jpgme a Steeler, Pirate, and Nittany Lion fan. My wife Mary and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary in 2009, and we have lived in the Carlisle area 32 years. We have two married daughters and two grandchildren whom we enjoy spending time with. In my other leisure activities, I enjoy both road and rails to trails bike riding, exercising, gardening, and yard work.

I’m a member of Allison United Methodist Church where, as an usher, I enjoy meeting and greeting people who come to the early service. At Allison, I also serve on a counting team, on the Investment Committee, and on the Prayer Life Committee, and I’m a member of United Methodist Men with whom I enjoy working at Project S.H.A.R.E.  I’ve also served on Allison’s Finance and Nominations Committees.

Although I’m a recent addition to the Second Presbyterian Church staff, I’ve been very impressed with the friendliness of the people and of the programs and ministries that Second Presbyterian provides.
